Vietnam vs Thailand vs Mexico for Dental Tourism: An Honest Comparison

    Richard & Judy Tran·May 2026·10 min read

We're biased — we live in Vietnam and built our business here. We'll say that upfront. But we've also spent years answering questions from patients who've considered Thailand or Mexico, and we think they deserve an honest, detailed comparison rather than marketing spin. Here it is.

    Why These Three Destinations?

Thailand, Vietnam, and Mexico are consistently the three most-searched dental tourism destinations among English-speaking patients from Canada, Australia, the UK, and the United States.

Thailand (primarily Bangkok and Phuket) has the longest established dental tourism industry and the most internationally recognised clinic brands. Mexico (primarily Los Algodones, Tijuana, and Cancún) is the dominant choice for American and Canadian patients because of its proximity. Vietnam — specifically Ho Chi Minh City — has emerged rapidly over the last decade as the most price-competitive option with quality that rivals or exceeds both competitors at the higher end.

Each destination has genuine strengths. Each also has weaknesses that travel websites conveniently omit. We're going to cover both.

Cost Comparison: Veneers, Implants & Crowns

    ProcedureVietnam (HCMC)Thailand (Bangkok)Mexico (Los Algodones)
    Porcelain veneer (per tooth)$250–$400$350–$600$280–$500
    Dental implant (incl. crown)$800–$1,200$1,200–$2,000$900–$1,600
    All-on-4 (per arch)$6,000–$9,000$9,000–$14,000$7,000–$12,000
    Zirconia crown$180–$300$280–$450$200–$350
    3-unit bridge$450–$700$700–$1,100$550–$900
    Teeth whitening$80–$150$150–$300$100–$200

    Clinic Quality: The Real Picture

All three destinations have excellent clinics at the top end. The difference is in the middle and bottom tier — and in how easy it is to accidentally end up there.

Thailand: Bangkok's top clinics (Bumrungrad, BNH, BIDC) are internationally accredited and genuinely world-class. The problem is that dental tourism in Thailand has become an industry, which means the range of quality is enormous. There are clinics in Bangkok that exist purely to process foreign patients at speed. The branding often looks impressive; the clinical experience is not.

Mexico: The Los Algodones area (known as "Molar City") has 300+ dental clinics in a few square kilometres. The sheer volume means competition keeps prices low — but also means quality is wildly inconsistent. American patients regularly report excellent results; they also account for the majority of dental tourism complaints. Proximity is the main advantage. Deep vetting is essential.

Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City's top-tier clinics are genuinely excellent — in many cases better equipped and better staffed than comparable clinics in Bangkok. The disadvantage is that HCMC doesn't have the same English-language review infrastructure as Bangkok, making independent vetting harder for foreign patients. That's precisely why a trusted concierge service matters more here than in Thailand or Mexico.

Travel Logistics: Flights, Visas & Time Zones

    • From Australia: Vietnam wins clearly. Sydney to HCMC is ~8 hours. Sydney to Bangkok is ~9 hours, and the flight costs are similar. Sydney to Mexico City is 20+ hours with connections — not practical for most Australian patients.
    • From Canada: Mexico is the shortest flight (4–6 hours from Vancouver, 5–8 from Toronto). Vietnam is 14–18 hours with connections. Thailand is similar to Vietnam. For Canadian patients, Mexico's proximity is a genuine advantage — but only if the quality and savings justify it.
    • From the UK: Vietnam and Thailand are roughly equivalent (11–13 hours). Mexico is 10–12 hours to Cancún but adds significant complexity. For UK patients, Vietnam and Thailand are natural choices.
    • From the US: Same as Canada — Mexico's proximity is the key advantage. Long-haul patients choosing Vietnam over Mexico are usually motivated by larger procedures (All-on-4, full mouth) where the savings justify the journey.
    • Visas: Vietnam, Thailand, and Mexico all offer simple e-Visa or visa-on-arrival processes for most Western nationalities. Vietnam's e-Visa costs $25 USD. Thailand offers 30-day visa-free entry for most passport holders. Mexico is visa-free for most Western countries.
    • Time zones: Mexico is closer in time zone for North American patients. Vietnam and Thailand are +7 hours from London — manageable, but require adjustment.

    Language & Communication

English proficiency varies across all three destinations.

Thailand: English is widely spoken in tourist areas and at international clinics, though depth of communication outside top-tier clinics can be limited. Most procedures are well-understood by English-speaking patients because the industry has adapted over decades.

Mexico: English is generally excellent at border-town clinics like Los Algodones because the clientele is almost exclusively American. Further south (Mexico City, Cancún), quality varies.

Vietnam: English proficiency in HCMC is high at international-standard clinics. Most dentists at the clinics we work with completed post-graduate training internationally and speak excellent English. Street-level English is less reliable than in Bangkok's tourist areas. Having a concierge who handles all communication removes this as a concern entirely.

The Savings Reality: After All Costs Are Included

The sticker price comparison doesn't tell the full story. Here's a more realistic cost comparison for an 8-veneer Hollywood Smile, all-in:

    Cost ComponentVietnamThailandMexico (for Canadian)
    8 porcelain veneers$2,400$3,600$2,800
    Concierge / hotel / transfers$1,999$2,200$800
    Return flights (from Sydney)$900$900$2,200
    Visa$25$0$0
    Total estimated cost~$5,324~$6,700~$5,800
    vs. Australian price ($18,000)Save ~$12,700Save ~$11,300Save ~$12,200

    Our Honest Verdict

For Australian, New Zealand, and UK patients: Vietnam is the clear choice. Prices are lower than Thailand, quality at top-tier clinics is comparable or better, and the flights are similar in length. Thailand is a solid fallback — particularly for patients who've already visited Bangkok and feel comfortable there.

For Canadian patients: The comparison between Vietnam and Mexico is genuine. Mexico wins on proximity and works well for simpler procedures (whitening, crowns, a few veneers). Vietnam wins on price for larger cases (All-on-4, full mouth rehab, 8+ veneers) — the larger the procedure, the more the Vietnam price advantage matters relative to the longer flight.

For US patients: Same calculus as Canada. Simple cases in a border town like Los Algodones make logistical sense. Complex cases where you're spending $10,000+ in Vietnam vs $15,000+ in the US — the flight justifies itself in the saving.

What none of these comparisons factor in is the experience of the trip itself. Ho Chi Minh City is one of the most vibrant, affordable, and exciting cities in the world. Patients come for dental work and leave wanting to come back for a holiday.

    Why We Chose Vietnam

Richard and I moved to Ho Chi Minh City because we came here for dental work and couldn't believe what we found — the quality, the price, the city, the food, the people. We stayed. We built SmileQuest because we wanted other Australians and Canadians to have the same experience we did, without the risk of walking into the wrong clinic.

We know this city. We know the clinics. We know which ones to avoid and which ones to trust. We've been in that chair ourselves.

That's not something a booking platform can offer. And it's why — with full acknowledgment of our bias — we think Vietnam is the right answer for most patients considering dental tourism.
